There's another shift that needs to take place if we're going to pass-on the faith to the next generation:
We must truly believe that love is stronger than fear.
I think this is always true.
But it is especially true in terms of Biblical character development. In the Christian story, love is the starting point, not fear of punishment.
Some of us would probably say that our faith development was very much motivated by a fear of punishment – as in eternal punishment. And I realize some fearful threats exist in scripture, that there are Bibl...

"Israel ate the meat of a dumb lamb to complete the Passover. Having done so, they smeared their doorposts with blood and laughed at the destroyer." - Athanasius 4th Century
Amidst the pain
Of suffering
Of deceit
Of injustice
Of sorrow
I Stand
Behind the Blood
And proclaim:
"You can kill my body but you cannot have my soul.
I am purchased by the Redeemer who Rose Again.
And when sin's tantrum is finally exhausted I will stand with my King,
Fully alive.

In the midst of listening to this week’s sermon, I thought about certain attitudes we see in our culture. For some reason, we have adopted this idea that everything has to be positively phrased. Telling people “no” is deemed judgmental. Some might say it infringes on our freedoms. Then the Ten Commandments were mentioned. I could hear people I know complaining about the negative nature of these rules. Eight out of the ten tell us what not to do.

Are you INTENTIONALLY working on your relationship with God? Need some help in getting started? Many people make the decision to engage in Spiritual Disciplines as a way of getting closer to God.
Spiritual disciplines are ways we open ourselves to God. They help to bring us to the place of honesty, grace, and soul transformation. Jesus modeled living in a “rhythm of life“, using spiritual practices to cultivate his intimacy with the Father.

Wondering how to help your children extend the lesson from children's chapel at Emmaus Church in Lincoln, CA on Sunday morning? Try these:
Every night this week focus on one family member. At dinner, have each family member share with that person what purpose he/she thinks God has given that specific family member.
Eat dinner together and talk about the four-fold pattern: Took, Blessed, Broke, Gave.
Invite important friends over for dinner. Enjoy fellowship with one another and pray for one another.

When I, as a preacher, dig into the reality that many of us are facing real pain, the email inbox fills up.
It’s a sobering reminder that, even here in Placer County, there are lots of hurting people.
Here’s a brief sample from the emails I received Monday:
The sermon hit the spot.
Thanks for sharing from your heart today.
Today, as soon as you mentioned "I had hoped..." I felt pain, but I am glad, because I felt something.
Your words, "The Christian response to brokenness is GRACE", keeps playing in my mind.
…the p...

On the first day of 2012 our community participated in something that, from the beginning of the Church, has been a big part of the Christian experience: we’ve shared a meal. We gathered around tables with others and we’ve shared food.
We came together as people who share a common need: we all need nourishment; and a common solution: food.
Isn’t it interesting how the same basic experience: eating, can happen in such a wide variety of ways?
On one level, eating can be a very basic, almost primal experience where I’m just filling a tank with...

At Emmaus, we value our gathering area and the atmosphere for worship. We are intentional about creating sacred space so that it is easier to engage in worship and to experience God each Sunday. For each series we take the opportunity to create a new set design that will help shape people's expereince in the worship service. Here's a peek into the creation of the current set for Advent.
Come Join us for Church in Lincoln, CA on a Sunday morning at 10 am and see what you think of the new design.
